Karate & Kobudo for Those Over 50

Wondering if you can start Karate or Kobudo after 50? Absolutely! Age is no barrier to martial arts. Many respected masters are well into their later years, and within our organization, we proudly have had students in their 60s and 70s who actively practice both karate and kobudo. In fact our senior instructor is in his 60s.

Tailored Training for Older Adults

At Kodokan Martial Arts, Karate and Kobudo focus on personal health, self-defense, and mental resilience—rather than just speed and agility. Our instructors begin by understanding any health concerns so they can adapt training for each individual. We have students with arthritis, heart conditions, and other concerns who thrive in our classes. Consulting your doctor before starting is always a good step, but age-related limitations won’t prevent you from enjoying the benefits of martial arts.

Senior Citizen's Karate Class

Our approach emphasizes progress at your own pace, respecting your age and physical abilities. For example, a lower kick can be just as effective as a high one, especially when adjusted to suit a mature body. Yes, students over 50 can absolutely achieve a Black Belt! We prioritize adapting the art to fit each student.

What You’ll Learn

Older students engage fully in all aspects of training, which includes:

                • Kihon (Basics)
                • Kata (Forms)
                • Bunkai (Application and Partner Drills)
                • Self-Defense

You’ll also delve into the philosophy and terminology that enriches the practice, making martial arts not just a physical but a rewarding mental journey.
