My son attends classes at Kodokan Martial Arts and has done for approximately one year which he thoroughly enjoys. The classes are suitable for all ages and abilities and are very welcoming for new starters. I would recommend the classes for children to build confidence and increase fitness. The best traditional Karate school in the area. Also the only the True Original Matayoshi Kobudo school in the UK. Others wish they were this good. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to train in Karate or Kobudo. My daughter has been trained by Sensei Bateman since she was 4 years old and also is training in Kobudo from 14 years old. I was so impressed that I joined Kobudo and wish I did so much sooner. If you want to learn Karate or Matayoshi Kobudo look no further than this school. I've been training with Kodokan Martial Arts for the past 16 years and have enjoyed every moment of it. The instruction is world class and the other students are great people.
On top of the weekly sessions, there are extra events put on throughout the year giving students access to a much higher level and variety of training than is available at many similar schools.
I cannot recommend Kodokan Martial Arts enough. Marc Faux 7 October 2019 Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. 1. A great club
I have been training with Kodokan for many years now and can honestly say that of all the groups I have trained with they are the best. The instructors are knowledgable and will always drive you to do your best and achieve better results. The work is hard but always worth it.

3. Kodokan Martial Arts
I’ve been training nearly 4 years now under Sensei and it’s been the best thing I’ve done. Just wish I’d started earlier! It’s a great group and Sensei’s knowledge and teaching abilities are second to none. A traditional school, Sensei emphasises the importance of etiquette and Japanese culture in the lessons and I’m also picking up some of the language! Go on… you wont regret it!!

4. Matayoshi Kobudo/Kodokan Martial Arts
As a practising martial artist and instructor I am very particular about whom I train with. First and foremost the quality of instruction and knowledge of the subject is paramount. Bateman Sensei fulfills both these criteria and then some!If you are wanting to start your journey in the martial arts or are already a practitioner you will not find better instruction, anywhere. Come and see for yourself you will not be disappointed.

My daughter has been training with Sensei Fred for 7 years. Not only are you taught karate but also all about the way and history of karate. She is also learning Kobudo now as well. Won’t go any where else. If you want to learn karate then this is the school to use.

6. Kodokan Martial Arts – A Family School
When I moved to Darlington back in 2002, I went round all the Karate Clubs in Darlington to find one that taught traditional martial arts with all the associated drills. After a couple of training sessions with Sensei Bateman I knew I had found the right club. Most of our children have attended the club for varying durations. Now our youngest is progressing in the junior class. If you are serious looking for a family school this is the one for you!

7. Kodokan Martial Arts for Karate and Kobudo
I originally signed up my sons as it was local to me, but later joined myself as I have always had an interest. I have found the instructors knowledgeable, personable, and patient. consequently my family have been training with Kodokan for the last six years. I would recommend this family run club to anyone.

8. Anshin Ryu
A family run school that offers a high standard of training in traditional martial arts. Anshin Ryu karate offers the student the opportunity to study a very traditional karate system in greater depth than is normally available in most karate schools. The style draws on older Okinawa systems, providing a depth and authenticity to the practice. Having been a student at this school for around 10 years, I’m still constantly learning more about this fascinating school of karate. It is not just the range of techniques, kata and supplementary training taught in this system but the depth to which the training goes, offering many levels of understanding of even basic techniques. I fully recommend this style of karate to any karateka seeking a true path in the martial arts.

10. GREAT CLUB HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
I would highly recommend this club. My 7 year old has been going for 18 months now, he really enjoys each session and is working his way up through the belts. The sessions provide just the right balance between fun, learning, and discipline which the kids really respond to. Some parents stay and watch, others (like me) use the valuable hour to get some jobs done – knowing the kids are safe and being well looked after by Fred and the other instructors. A great club at a very reasonable price.

13. Traditional martial arts
Traditional karate style, strict with lots of theory and etiquette teaching as well as the physical moves. Teaches several styles which can include anshin ryu, kamashin and Kobudo. Classes are available on 3 different days each week which means you can vary your practise based around your needs and budget. Staff are experienced and knowledgeable with first hand experience of training in Japan and competing in their art.

14. Excellent Martial Arts school
My daughter has trained in Karate to 1st Dan and is also training in Kobudo with Sensei Bateman. I was so impressed with the teachings of Sensei Bateman that I also joined training in Kobudo. Not only do you learn the practical side but also the traditional too. My only regret is that I didn’t join earlier. By far the best school of Karate and Kobudo around.

15. More than Karate.
Firm friendly instructors. Great with bringing on children. Not just at Karate but in character, tenacity and much more. Good back up service with website to get more information and he will answer his emails promptly.

16. Outstanding
Our son is on the Autistic spectrum and has dyspraxia,we wanted to chose a club that could teach him to defend himself because he is a vulnerable member of society. This club is wonderful it has not only taught him the skills he needs but also has helped his coordination and confidence. Sensei Fred and Chris are fantastic teachers and extremely knowledgable. I am so pleased we chose this club. I would highly recommend!

18. Authentic. Supportive. Traditional.
We are new to martial arts so didn’t know what to expect and were dubious of some clubs mixing martial arts because would rather pay for achievements that are widely recognised. We have boys of several ages who go and admit it can be hard work but the traditional values and respect pays off and they are now achieving different grades so is worth it as an investment for the fees (which are great value anyway without expensive outfits). Would recommend this school to anybody, it really helps your kids confidence grow in their decisions and pays off for physical fitness.

Very Professional Club
5 June 2025
This is a very professional club with dedicated instructors who have the best interest of their students at the forefront of everything they do. My grandson loved attending and it was a joy to see how the young students progressed and grew in confidence. I would have no hesitation in recommending this club to students young and old.
