I retired early at the age of 60, was overweight and suffered with arthritis. I wanted some form of activity. I found this family run Kobudo Club and so I enquired. Went along to watch, very impressed and Sensei made me feel very welcome. I became a club member and now much fitter, enjoying my Kobudo at the age of 73. Will always be grateful to my Sensei, his family and my fellow students.

My son has been training with Bateman Sensei for Kobudo, having previously started training in Anshin Ryu. We have found Bateman Sensei an exacting teacher, following in the traditions delivered by the Matayoshi family as they have been taught by Sanguinetti Sensei. The etiquette, culture and history are given their due importance, and the reasons behind the kata are clearly explained. At a time when the martial arts are often dumbed-down to appeal to a mass market, this faithfulness is to be commended. I would commend MKKI and Bateman Sensei to anyone with a serious interest in the martial arts and particularly those who wish to study a coherent system integral to its proper culture and history.

Having been training with Sensei Bateman for just over 6 months I can say it's been a fantastic experience that's taught me so much. From the wide range of kobudo weapons to how one should act and behave as a true martial artist. Everyone is incredibly friendly and our class helps everyone get the best out of one another. I couldn't recommend this enough to anyone wanting to try something different and pick up an amazing skill from a fantastic school.

I have been studying Kobudo with Bateman Sensei since 2009 and have learned so much. The standard of tuition is exceptional and delivered in a fun and friendly atmosphere, while maintaining the true essence of Japanese etiquette and culture.

I've been studying matayoshi kobudo with sensei Fred Bateman for about 1-3 years at this dojo now and it's probably been the best choice I've ever made! I personal owe a thank you to him for getting me into the traditional side of martial arts and for rediscovering a passion again! The tution at the school is both enjoyable and the atmosphere at the club very friendly. The classes are run with a set citeria in mind, and sensei Bateman helps you work through the relevant syllabus while at the time helps you keep your technique and form correct. I would highly recommend this dojo to anyone wishing to start their own personal journey into budo and traditional martial arts, the tution is second to non!!

As a practising martial artist and instructor I am very particular about whom I train with. First and foremost the quality of instruction and knowledge of the subject is paramount.Bateman Sensei fulfills both these criteria and then some!If you are wanting to start your journey in the martial arts or are already a practitioner you will not find better instruction, anywhere. Come and see for yourself you will not be disappointed.

My daughter has been attending the Karate club for two years now. The club is very well run by friendly, experienced instructors. My daughter is not only learning the physical aspects of karate but the values of positive attitude, discipline and respect. The fact that we make a 40 mile round trip twice a week speaks for its self.

My 6 year old son has been attending the karate club for just over a year now and absolutely loves it. He is learning a martial art but also has lots of fun. The instructors are very patient and brilliant at teaching small children. I would highly recommend this club.

My two boys have been attending this club and they love the training which is made fun ...they come home and show the family what they have learned and I believe they are getting taught good self defense skills for a reasonable price and also a great insight to the karate culture.

My daughter has been with this school for 10 years now and really enjoys going. Sensei is very patient with the students and teaches in a way that both children and adults understand. One of the finest karate schools around.

I train in the senior Anshin class and have done for about 5 years. It is a traditional style which also focuses on etiquette and Japanese terms/language. My only regret is I didnt start earlier! It is a very friendly, welcoming class. My son also trains in the junior class and he loves it. The knowledge of Senseis Fred, Chris and Stuart is fantastic and they have a wealth of experience. Come along and have a look, you'll soon be hooked!

Excellent for my boys

My three boys have been attending Karate with Sensei Fred Bateman for the last year, and I have been very impressed with the way he teaches the young. It is evident that the students are happy and have an immense respect for Sensei Bateman. Highly recommended.

As a former member of the club, I knew there was only one place when all my children were old enough to attend. With professionally trained instructors in martial arts who run fun, friendly classes for all abilities, they teach so much more than just kicking and punching; like discipline and respect, etiquette, building confidence and self esteem. The club teaches the children not only karate/self defence skills, but life skills, as well as building their fitness levels and confidence. This is a very well run and organised club and I would recommend to anyone.

A family run school that offers a high standard of training in traditional martial arts. Kamishin Ryu karate offers the adult (16 years plus) the opportunity to study a very traditional karate system in greater depth than is normally available in most karate schools. Although the style was formulated in the mid 1960's by Kameyama Eiichi Sensei, it draws on older Okinawa systems, providing a depth and authenticity to the practice. Having been a student at this school for around 10 years, I'm still constantly learning more about this fascinating school of karate. It is not just the range of techniques, kata and supplementary training taught in this system but the depth to which the training goes, offering many levels of understanding of even basic techniques. I fully recommend this style of karate to any karateka seeking a true path in the martial arts. Gary

Kodokan Martial Arts - A Family School

When I moved to Darlington back in 2002, I went round all the Karate Clubs in Darlington to find one that taught traditional martial arts with all the associated drills. After a couple of training sessions with Sensei Bateman I knew I had found the right club. Most of our children have attended the club for varying durations. Our youngest has recently achieved the highest grade in Little Dragon before progressing on to the junior class. If you are serious looking for a family school this is the one for you!

Don't go anywhere else!

I have been training with Kodokan for over 18 months and have learned so much. I started as a complete novice and was made to feel part of the family from day 1, Sensei is a great teacher and a fantastic martial artist. If your thinking of joining don't keep putting it off...Just do it!
